Inner & Collector Nozzle

Nozzle brick is made by unburned production process by using high-purity alumina and carbon as raw materials, adding phenolic resin as binder.

GUOLIANG inner and collector nozzles are refractory components designed for steel ladle flow-control systems. Manufactured from high-purity alumina-carbon materials through an unburned production process, they combine good corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance and dimensional stability for demanding steelmaking conditions.

The ladle inner nozzle, also called a ladle upper nozzle, is installed in the ladle bottom and directs molten steel into the sliding gate system. The collector nozzle, positioned below the slide gate plate, guides the controlled steel stream toward the ladle shroud or downstream casting system.

Together with the sliding gate plates and well block, these refractory nozzles help maintain a stable molten steel flow path during continuous casting.

Inner Nozzle vs. Collector Nozzle

Although both products are part of the ladle flow-control system, they perform different functions.

Inner Nozzle / Upper Nozzle

  • Installed inside the ladle bottom or well block
  • Connects the molten steel inside the ladle with the slide gate
  • Directly exposed to molten steel for extended periods
  • Requires good corrosion and erosion resistance
  • Bore dimensions must match the required steel flow rate

Collector Nozzle / Lower Nozzle

  • Installed below the sliding gate plate
  • Collects and directs molten steel after it passes through the slide gate
  • Connects the gate system with the ladle shroud or casting stream
  • Requires good thermal shock and erosion resistance
  • Accurate dimensions help ensure reliable installation and steel flow

The inner nozzle, slide gate plate and collector nozzle therefore work together as an integrated ladle sliding gate refractory system.

Performance Requirements for Ladle Refractory Nozzles

Inner and collector nozzles operate under severe thermal and mechanical conditions. Molten steel flow, temperature fluctuations and repeated casting operations can gradually cause bore erosion, cracking or refractory wear.

GUOLIANG refractory nozzles are designed with the following performance considerations:

  • Good resistance to molten steel erosion
  • Excellent thermal shock resistance
  • Stable refractory structure at high temperatures
  • Good mechanical strength
  • Controlled apparent porosity
  • Stable bore geometry during service
  • Reduced risk of cracking and premature failure
  • Reliable matching with ladle slide gate systems

These characteristics make our ladle refractory nozzles suitable for continuous casting operations where consistent flow control and stable refractory performance are required.

Applications of Inner & Collector Nozzles

GUOLIANG inner and collector nozzles can be used in different steelmaking and continuous casting operations, including:

  • Steel ladle sliding gate systems
  • Billet continuous casting
  • Bloom continuous casting
  • Slab continuous casting
  • Carbon steel production
  • Alloy steel production
  • Special steel casting
  • Ladle-to-tundish molten steel transfer systems

Different refractory grades and nozzle dimensions can be selected according to steel grade, ladle capacity, casting temperature and required service conditions.

How to Select an Inner or Collector Nozzle

Choosing the right ladle inner nozzle or collector nozzle requires more than matching the outside dimensions. Buyers should consider the complete casting conditions.

1. Nozzle Dimensions

Provide the overall diameter, height, bore diameter and other key dimensions. Existing drawings are particularly useful when replacing refractory components in an installed sliding gate system.

2. Steel Grade

Carbon steel, alloy steel and special steel may impose different corrosion and erosion conditions on refractory components.

3. Casting Temperature

The operating temperature influences refractory wear and thermal shock conditions and should be considered when choosing the appropriate material grade.

4. Slide Gate System

The inner nozzle, sliding gate plate and collector nozzle must match the existing ladle gate mechanism. Dimensional compatibility is important for installation and stable operation.

5. Expected Service Life

Tell us the current nozzle performance, casting sequence or required service target. This information helps determine the appropriate refractory composition and structure.

Custom Ladle Inner & Collector Nozzles

GUOLIANG can manufacture custom inner nozzles and collector nozzles according to customer drawings and operating requirements.

Customization can include:

  • Outer diameter
  • Overall height
  • Bore diameter
  • Nozzle geometry
  • Refractory composition
  • Matching sliding gate system
  • Application-specific performance requirements

If you are replacing an existing nozzle, send us the original refractory drawing or product dimensions. For new steel plant projects, our team can also evaluate the operating conditions and help select a suitable refractory solution.

GUOLIANG supplies refractory products for steel ladle systems, including inner nozzles, collector nozzles, sliding gate plates, well blocks and other ladle refractories.

For steel plants, refractory distributors and engineering projects, we can support both replacement requirements and project-based refractory supply with dimensional matching and material selection.

FAQ-Inner & Collector Nozzle

What is a ladle inner nozzle?

A ladle inner nozzle, also known as an upper nozzle, is installed at the bottom of the steel ladle. It directs molten steel from the ladle into the sliding gate system and forms an important part of the ladle flow-control assembly.

What is a ladle collector nozzle?

A ladle collector nozzle, sometimes called a lower nozzle, is installed beneath the slide gate plate. It collects molten steel passing through the gate and directs it toward the ladle shroud or subsequent casting system.

What material is used for inner and collector nozzles?

GUOLIANG's current inner and collector nozzle grades use alumina-carbon refractory materials. The existing SK-1 and SK-2 grades are available with different Al₂O₃ and carbon contents to meet different operating requirements.

Can you manufacture collector nozzles according to our drawing?

Yes. Dimensions, bore size, shape and refractory specifications can be produced according to customer drawings and operating requirements.

What information is required to select a ladle nozzle?

We recommend providing the nozzle drawing, dimensions, bore diameter, steel grade, casting temperature, slide gate system and expected service conditions.
