Ladle Castable

Ladle castable is made of high quality bauxite clinker, corundum, magnesia, magnesia alumina spinel and superfine powder, prepared with different binders and admixtures.

Available grades include LMJ-80, LMS-85 and LMS-90 for 60T–200T steel ladles. Different refractory compositions can be selected according to ladle capacity, steel grade, slag conditions, lining position and required service performance.

Where Is Ladle Castable Used?

Steel ladles operate under repeated heating and cooling cycles while holding and transporting high-temperature molten steel. Refractory castables can be used in different areas of the ladle depending on the lining design and operating conditions.

Typical applications include:

  • Steel ladle bottom
  • Ladle sidewall
  • Local lining repair
  • Working lining construction
  • Safety or permanent lining applications
  • Areas around refractory functional components
  • Maintenance of worn ladle refractory linings

The appropriate steel ladle refractory castable should be selected according to the thermal, mechanical and chemical load of each lining area

Installation and Drying of Ladle Castable

Correct installation is essential for obtaining the intended performance from a refractory castable.

A typical installation process includes:

Surface Preparation → Mixing → Casting/Vibration → Curing → Controlled Drying → Ladle Preheating → Service

During installation:

  • Use clean mixing equipment and water.
  • Follow the recommended water addition for the selected castable.
  • Mix until a uniform consistency is achieved.
  • Ensure adequate vibration and compaction during casting.
  • Avoid excessive mixing water.
  • Allow sufficient curing before drying.
  • Follow a controlled drying and preheating schedule before introducing molten steel.

Water addition, mixing time, curing conditions and heating schedules should be adjusted according to the specific ladle castable grade and site conditions.

What Affects Ladle Castable Service Life?

The service life of a steel ladle castable lining is not determined by refractory composition alone. Several operating factors can influence refractory consumption:

  • Steel and slag chemistry
  • Molten steel temperature
  • Ladle refining time
  • Number of heating and cooling cycles
  • Lining thickness
  • Installation quality
  • Mixing water control
  • Drying and preheating procedure
  • Localized steel or slag erosion
  • Ladle maintenance practices

When evaluating refractory consumption, it is useful to analyze both the material specification and the actual operating conditions.

Our product range also includes magnesia carbon bricks, sliding gate plates, inner and collector nozzles, porous plugs, purging plugs, well blocks and other ladle refractory components.

By combining refractory material selection with actual ladle operating conditions, we help steel plants and refractory distributors select more suitable products for new linings, maintenance and replacement projects.

FAQ-Ladle Castable

What is ladle castable?

Ladle castable is an unshaped refractory material used to construct or repair refractory linings in steel ladles. After mixing with the specified amount of water, it is installed by casting and forms a dense monolithic refractory lining after curing and controlled drying.

What is ladle castable made of?

GUOLIANG ladle castable is produced using materials such as bauxite clinker, corundum, magnesia, magnesia-alumina spinel, superfine powders, binders and additives.

Where is refractory castable used in a steel ladle?

Depending on refractory design and operating conditions, castable can be used for ladle bottoms, sidewalls, lining repairs and other monolithic lining areas.

How do I choose a ladle castable grade?

Consider ladle capacity, lining position, steel grade, slag chemistry, operating temperature, refining conditions and required service life. Providing existing lining performance can also help with grade selection.

Can you recommend a castable to replace our existing ladle refractory?

Yes. Provide the existing refractory specification, ladle capacity, application position, service life and main wear problem. GUOLIANG can evaluate these conditions and recommend an appropriate refractory grade.

Need Ladle Castable for Your Steel Plant?

Send us your ladle capacity, lining position, steel grade, refractory specification and current service life. GUOLIANG can recommend a suitable ladle castable grade for new lining, repair or refractory replacement projects and provide a quotation based on your operating requirements.
