Well Block

Tundish well blocks are a Tundish refractory precast shape that is used to fill the pocket area of a tundish where each tundish nozzle is inserted.  Using a precast block gives the user a consistent shape to locate and insert a nozzle. 

Difference Between Ladle Well Block and Tundish Well Block

Although both are called “well block”, the ladle well block and tundish well block are designed for different positions and working conditions in steelmaking systems.

1. Installation Position

• Ladle Well Block
  Installed at the bottom center of the steel ladle, forming a key structural part of the ladle refractory lining.
• Tundish Well Block
  Installed at the bottom outlet area of the tundish, connecting with the tundish nozzle or flow control system.

2. Working Conditions

• Ladle Well Block
  • Direct contact with molten steel (1550–1650°C)
  • Severe thermal shock and strong slag/steel erosion
  • High static pressure from molten steel
• Tundish Well Block
  • Contact with secondary refined molten steel
  • Relatively more stable temperature conditions
  • Lower pressure but higher requirement for flow stability and cleanliness

  • Supports ladle bottom nozzle system
  • Resists strong erosion from molten steel and slag
  • Ensures structural stability and ladle safety
• Tundish Well Block
  • Controls steel flow into the mold
  • Works with sliding gate or stopper rod systems
