Metallurgical Auxiliary Materials

Metallurgical auxiliary materials play an important supporting role throughout steelmaking, secondary refining and continuous casting. Although they are not part of the permanent refractory lining, their performance can directly influence molten steel temperature control, oxidation protection, steel cleanliness and casting stability.

GUOLIANG provides metallurgical auxiliary materials for molten steel handling and continuous casting applications, with current product solutions including covering agents and continuous casting mold powder.

Our materials can be selected according to steel grade, process position, casting conditions and required metallurgical performance.

Our Metallurgical Auxiliary Materials

Covering Agent for Ladles and Tundishes

A covering agent, also called covering powder, is applied to the molten steel surface in a steel ladle or tundish.

It forms a protective layer that helps:

  • Reduce molten steel heat loss
  • Maintain a more stable steel temperature
  • Reduce direct contact between molten steel and air
  • Minimize secondary oxidation
  • Help absorb floating non-metallic inclusions
  • Reduce surface crust formation
  • Support cleaner and more stable casting operations

GUOLIANG FGJ series covering agents are available with different carbon content and CaO/SiO₂ ratios for different steel grades and operating requirements.

Mold Powder for Continuous Casting

Mold powder, also known as mold flux or continuous casting powder, is added to the molten steel surface inside the continuous casting mold.

After heating, the powder melts and forms a slag layer and slag film between the solidifying steel shell and the copper mold.

Its primary functions include:

  • Thermal insulation of the molten steel meniscus
  • Protection against secondary oxidation
  • Absorption of non-metallic inclusions
  • Lubrication between the strand shell and mold
  • Control of mold heat transfer
  • Support for stable strand solidification
  • Improvement of continuous casting stability

GUOLIANG BST series mold powders are available for ultra-low carbon steel, carbon steel, low-alloy steel and high-carbon steel applications.

Covering Agent vs. Mold Powder

Although both products are metallurgical powders used around molten steel, they have different application positions and functions.

Product Application Position Main Functions
Covering Agent Steel ladle / tundish Thermal insulation, oxidation protection, inclusion absorption
Mold Powder Continuous casting mold Lubrication, heat-transfer control, insulation, oxidation protection and inclusion absorption

A ladle or tundish covering agent is primarily selected according to thermal insulation, steel cleanliness and protection requirements.

A continuous casting mold powder must additionally provide suitable melting, viscosity, lubrication and heat-transfer characteristics for the casting machine.

Selecting the correct material for each process position is therefore essential.

Applications in the Steelmaking Process

GUOLIANG metallurgical auxiliary materials can support different stages of steel production, including:

Steelmaking → Ladle Treatment → Secondary Refining → Tundish → Continuous Casting Mold

Typical applications include:

  • BOF steelmaking
  • EAF steelmaking
  • LF refining
  • Secondary metallurgy
  • Steel ladle molten steel covering
  • Tundish molten steel covering
  • Billet continuous casting
  • Bloom continuous casting
  • Slab continuous casting
  • Carbon steel production
  • Low-alloy steel production
  • High-carbon steel production
  • Ultra-low carbon steel production

Different process stages require different material properties, so product selection should always consider actual operating conditions.

How to Select Metallurgical Auxiliary Materials

When purchasing steelmaking auxiliary materials, chemical composition alone should not be the only selection criterion.

Application Position

First determine whether the material will be used in a ladle, tundish or continuous casting mold.

The required performance differs significantly between these positions.

Steel Grade

Carbon content and alloy composition influence molten steel behavior and solidification characteristics. Different steel grades may therefore require different covering agent or mold powder formulations.

Operating Temperature

Molten steel temperature affects melting behavior, thermal insulation and interaction with metallurgical powders.

Casting Speed

For continuous casting mold powder, casting speed is particularly important because it affects slag consumption, infiltration and lubrication requirements.

Casting Section

Billet, bloom and slab casters have different mold geometries and heat-transfer requirements.

Process Duration

Ladle holding time, refining time and continuous casting sequence can influence the required stability of the metallurgical auxiliary material.

Current Operating Problems

When replacing an existing material, provide details about issues such as:

  • Excessive temperature drop
  • Secondary oxidation
  • Poor steel cleanliness
  • Surface crust formation
  • Unstable mold powder consumption
  • Poor mold lubrication
  • Excessive slag rim formation
  • Strand surface defects
  • Inconsistent casting performance

Analyzing actual operating problems helps identify a more appropriate product grade.

Why Metallurgical Powder Properties Matter

Different physical and chemical properties can affect how auxiliary materials behave in actual steelmaking conditions.

Depending on the product, important parameters may include:

  • Chemical composition
  • CaO/SiO₂ ratio
  • Carbon content
  • Particle size
  • Moisture
  • Bulk density
  • Melting temperature
  • Melting speed
  • Viscosity
  • Thermal insulation performance

For mold powder, viscosity and melting behavior are particularly important because liquid slag must infiltrate between the strand shell and mold to provide lubrication.

For covering agents, thermal insulation, coverage stability and compatibility with the steelmaking process are generally more important.

Metallurgical Auxiliary Materials for Different Steel Grades

GUOLIANG can supply materials for different steelmaking conditions, including:

Carbon Steel

Covering agents and mold powders can be selected according to carbon content, operating temperature and casting conditions.

Low-Alloy Steel

Material chemistry should be evaluated together with steel composition and required casting performance.

High-Carbon Steel

Different solidification characteristics may require mold powder with suitable viscosity, melting characteristics and heat-transfer behavior.

Ultra-Low Carbon Steel

For steel grades with strict chemistry and cleanliness requirements, carbon content and metallurgical compatibility should be considered carefully.

FAQ

What are metallurgical auxiliary materials?

Metallurgical auxiliary materials are materials used to support steelmaking, refining, molten steel handling and continuous casting processes. Depending on the application, they can provide thermal insulation, oxidation protection, inclusion control, lubrication or heat-transfer control.

What metallurgical auxiliary materials does GUOLIANG supply?

GUOLIANG currently supplies covering agents for steel ladles and tundishes as well as mold powder for continuous casting molds.

What is the difference between mold powder and covering powder?

Covering powder is primarily used on molten steel surfaces in ladles and tundishes for insulation and oxidation protection. Mold powder is used inside a continuous casting mold and additionally provides strand lubrication and controlled mold heat transfer.

Are metallurgical auxiliary materials selected according to steel grade?

Yes. Steel chemistry, carbon content, operating temperature, casting speed and process position can all influence material selection.

Can you match our existing mold powder or covering agent?

Yes. Provide your current technical specification, steel grade and operating conditions so the required chemical and physical properties can be evaluated.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the product type, steel grade, application position, operating conditions, current specification and required quantity. For mold powder, casting section and casting speed should also be provided.

  • Covering Powder

Covering powder is mainly used to cover the molten steel surface of ladle and tundish in the process of continuous casting. The function is to avoid excessive temperature drop of molten steel during transportation and casting, and cold steel on molten steel surface.

  • Mold Powder

Mold powder is a synthetic slag that covers the molten steel surface in the mould during the casting process, stabilizes the casting operation and improves the surface quality of the slab.
